Geriatrician
A Geriatrician is a doctor who specializes in conditions affecting older people. A Geriatrician conducts a “comprehensive geriatric assessment”, which covers current medical, psychological and social problems and includes a review of all current medications.
Geriatricians have expertise in the assessment and management of cognitive impairment/dementia, falls, osteoporosis and continence problems. Geriatricians commonly work in a multi-disciplinary team, along with allied health professionals such as physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech pathologists.
General Physician
General Physicians are doctors who specialize in the care of complex medical problems, often those where the diagnosis is unclear, and in the care of people with multiple medical conditions. They have extensive training in managing acutely unwell patients admitted to hospital, including those requiring intensive care.
General Physicians have knowledge of diagnostic tests, non-surgical treatments and of medications and their interactions. General Physicians also have expertise in pre-operative assessment and minimizing risks of surgery through appropriate management of medical conditions.
